The Crucible Story Essay Example For Students

The Crucible Story Essay A crucible has two definitions: 1) a container made of a substance that can resist great heat and 2) a severe test or trial. In The Crucible, John Proctor is representative of both of these definitions because of the situations that he must overcome and the people that he has to deal with. Abigail Williams, the ringleader of the possessed children, is the source of Proctors problems, and it is his challenge to attempt to win the battle against her and the unrelenting town. John Proctor can be considered to be a very strong man. He is one of the few people in the town that refuses to believe that the children are actually possessed, and he shows no fear of expressing this belief to the courts and to the people of the village. Theyre pretending, Mr. Danforth! (Miller, 115) At this point, Abby and Susanna Walcott continue saying things such as, Mary, dont come down and Shes stretching her claws! (115) where after, Proctor immediately responds by declaring that they are lying. Throughout the course of the trial John persistently insists that the girls are liars; however, he cannot convince the court of this truth. We will write a custom essay on The Crucible Story specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are many other instances in the play that display John as a very bold man that must withstand a huge amount of pressure. A great example of his bravery is his determination to save his wife, Elizabeth, from being condemned. From the very moment she is taken away from their home, he is completely convinced that he will be able to rescue his wife. I will bring you home. I will bring you soon I will fall like an ocean on that court! Fear nothing, Elizabeth (77-78). He honestly believes that he will be able to handle the corruption of the blind court with his fairly weak evidence and arguments. Another ongoing problem that John must overcome is his passion for Abigail Williams. Toward the beginning of the play, one can see the signs of weakness that John displays whenever he is speaking to Abby. However, after she continues to accuse innocent people of being witches, he quickly realizes what a horrible and truly disturbed person she has become. The reader can see how easily Proctor is able to resist her charms, for he knows what a pathetic and evil person she is. If you do not free my wife tomorrow, I am set and bound to ruin you, Abby (151). It is evident that John has risen above his passion for Abby, and he shows here that he has become a stronger man by telling her that he will ruin her. However strong a man John proves to be, he is not indestructible, just like a crucible. One can definitely see the signs of his downfall after he himself is accused of assisting the devil. I have been thinking I would confess to them, Elizabeth. What say you? If I give them that? (135). He changes from a man that seems to be able to withstand anything to a man that has been melted down by the heat and pressure of the trials. John Proctor can also represent the second definition of a crucible: a severe test or trial. Throughout the entire play, he is destined to attempt to save his wife, the others accused, and eventually himself. His true test occurs at the end of the play when he must decide whether or not he should confess to aiding Satan. The reader and John know that he is innocent, but it is John who must choose life or death. He already believes that he is going to Hell because of his crime with Abigail; therefore, he is not afraid to be hanged. .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .postImageUrl , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:hover , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:visited , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:active { border:0!important; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:active , .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3a16f9b531852ebbc61253d7cd1e282c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dramatic irony EssayNevertheless, he is not ready to commit another crime and lie by confessing to something that he did not do. He knows that if he confesses, he will stain his name, and if the townspeople hear of his confession, then they will be at a complete loss. Many of them would probably think, If John Proctor could be a wizard, then anyone could be a witch or wizard. John knows that he has to die in order to save others and to show that he will not crumble and admit to a charge in which he is innocent. He is so determined to save his name and to explain what damage would be done if the town saw his signed confession that he causes a great commotion during his trial. Beguile me not! I blacken when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence! (143) Proctor also proceeds to declare that he has committed sins but he refuses to lose the dignity that is left in his name. because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name! (143) In the end, John Proctor tears his confession into pieces because he cannot live with the fact that he would be confessing to something that he did not do. He realizes that this decision will ultimately lead to his execution; however, he knows that he has to make this choice in order to show the world that this witch-hunt is ludicrous. Although Proctor is able to endure incredible amounts of pressure, he is still a human being who simply could not withstand the strain of the townspeople and his surroundings.

Review of Soul by Soul essays

Review of Soul by Soul essays Using evidence and information obtained through slave narratives and slave- holders' letters, Walter Johnson, in the book Soul by Soul depicts life inside the Antebellum slave market. Digging deep into the roots, the meaning, and impact of the slave market, one is brought to realize exactly how the system of slavery effected the history of America. Walter Johnson portrays the slave market through different power relationships existing within the slave market. Slave buyers, slave traders, and slaves, through a need and want to control their own future for the better of themselves, shaped the Antebellum Slave Trade. As a result through mental and physical influence they were able to manipulate one another. As these points are shown throughout the book, Walter Johnson makes it evident that this "event" had a great impact on the shaping of America in this time period (aprox. Between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War). These three main influences (slaves, traders, and buyers) were carefully intertwined amongst each other in a complicated chain, which could be clearly stated as irrational minded. As buyers and traders constantly were setting traps for other unknowingly: "Traders found themselves caught in the trap they had set for buyers: unable to trust the slaves but uncertain about dismissing their answers" (Soul by Soul 180). Walter Johnson opens the book explaining the Chattel Principle, which describes the treatment of slaves as property: "slave's identity might be disrupted as easily as a price could be set and a piece of paper passed from one hand to another" (Soul by Soul 19). This Chattel Principle plummets deep within the relationship between slaves and the non-slaves as a relationship between a powerful race and a race who is treated as a piece of property. Although this relationship is quite broad at this point in the book, one is introduced to a bigger underlying idea that lay in the back of the people's mi...

How to Write a Joke

How to Write a Joke How to Write a Joke How to Write a Joke By Michael Like any short form of writing, creating jokes teaches how to use a few words effectively. In this article, I will give examples of jokes and I will (shudder) explain them too. I know, you shouldnt explain your jokes, but this helps us talk about them. Good jokes are often: Incongruous This is the central feature of humor. That is, something that is funny is also surprising. Yes, it also needs to be recognizable (see below) unless you know what something is, you dont know what to expect from it. Unless youre familiar with something, you dont know whats unfamiliar. But a joke needs to present its subject in an unexpected way. â€Å"Well, what shall I talk about? I ain’t got anything funny to say. All I know is what I read in the papers.† Will Rogers Recognizable Thats probably why comics and humorists get so much material from current events or popular culture. They know their audiences will recognize the jokes if its based on what everyone is currently talking about. Thats also why inside jokes work so well. When I was sixteen, I combined several of my history teachers favorite expressions into one sentence: Well, ol Richelieu thought that was such a hoot that he lost his facilities like there wasnt going to be a tomorrow. That may not seem particularly funny to you, but it seemed funny to my fellow history students. Pretentious? Moi? Short A joke is funniest when it uses the fewest possible words, because humor requires limiting complexity. Robert I. M. Dunbar, an experimental psychologist at Oxford University, found that the funniest jokes have only two characters and less than five layers of meaning. On one hand, your joke is not funny if you have to explain it. On the other hand, if nobody understands the point, its not funny either. Humor depends on a careful, delicate balance between giving too many hints and giving too few. The preceding joke comes from a Reddit list of the worlds shortest jokes, and its irony is that if you use gratuitous French words such as moi, you will seem pretentious. I wanted to give you a chance to get the joke before I explained it. It doesn’t really matter how many sit-ups you did this morning if you get hit with a Volvo. Ronald Dee White, paraphrased Specific A joke about Volvos in particular is funnier than one about cars in general. Writers know that specifics are more interesting than generalities, but that apparently makes them more humorous too. Lets face it, some words are funnier than others. Unfortunately for the Ford Motor Company, their car name Edsel was too humorous to become popular. Ronald Dee Whites joke has the added irony of being hit by the worlds safest car. Wait til the yoga class sees my killer tree position. Unexpected Thats why a humorist must be like a magician, able to hide his tricks. Or like a mystery writer, who wants her readers say, I should have seen that coming exactly half the time and I would never have seen that coming the other half of the time. If readers expect the punchline, it may not turn out funny. Thats why a well-presented joke may not sound like a joke until the end. I think my humor, more than anything else, depends on bluntness. That is, when I make people laugh, its often by being dead serious. It surprises people that Im saying exactly whats happening. For example, we dont expect a successful adult to admit theyre taking yoga classes to impress other successful adults, and the joke is funnier because of the incongruity between competitiveness and yogas goal of attaining control over ones desires (I think). This is one of about twelve drafts of this joke. How would you rewrite it to make it funnier? When I came to this town, said the millionaire businessman, I had only a quarter in my pocket. But I used that quarter wisely. I called home for more money. Insightful A good joke goes beyond incongruity to touch what it means to be human. Its incongruous to play a trick on a disabled person, but because its inhumane and unjust, somehow its not really funny. When good triumphs over evil, or when a pompous person is humbled, that makes the joke more satisfying. And just being human is often funny. Our expectations lead us to assume the businessman will boast of investing 25 cents and turning it into a million dollars. We havent done something like that, but instead of making us feeling like failures, this joke lets us feel good that the businessman didnt either. Respectful Some pseudo-jokes are incongruous but not funny because they dont make sense or respect their audience. One is the interminable shaggy dog story whose punchline doesnt justify the time spent hearing it. In the original joke, after a long series of irrelevant digressions (one such joke takes 45 minutes to tell) that have little to do with the dog in question, a character finally says only, Hes not so shaggy. Another group of jokes shares the meaningless punchline: No soap, radio. But because the punchline isnt funny, these jokes are themselves practical jokes. The teller gets perverse amusement from his bewildered audience (Get it? No soap RADIO! Ha ha ha!), either when they admit I dont get it, or when they pretend to find the joke humorous. Two old ladies are in a restaurant. One complains, You know, the food here is just terrible. The other shakes her head and adds, And such small portions. Woody Allen Narrative If you want to touch your readers humanity as well as surprise them, maybe you shouldnt write jokes, but write stories. The best humor includes the basic elements of a story, such as character and conflict and wisdom. If you simply follow a standard joke structure, such as garden path or reverse, your readers may anticipate your punchline. But when you tell a story, you may catch your readers off guard they may not realize youre telling a joke. Woody Allen describes people we all know, who complain a lot, but his joke reminds us that after a certain point, complaining doesnt make sense. Humor is studied by scientists: University of Western Ontario psychology professor Rod Martin has found more than 4,000 peer-reviewed journal articles on the psychology of humor. But as you practice it, youll discover that humor writing is not only a science, but an art as well. You can never predict with certainty what people will laugh at. Law of Contract II Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Law of Contract II - Essay Example Whether CBL can claim for breach of contract against Ricky for non – payment of money for the work completed. Rule of Law A false statement of fact, during the formation of a contract, by one of the parties to the contract, constitutes misrepresentation. As per the provisions of the Misrepresentation Act 1967, the representor is liable for fraudulent misrepresentation, despite his not having made the statement fraudulently.1 The party to the contract that undergoes loss due to this misrepresentation can either revoke the contract or claim damages.2 Application Ricky’s contract with CBL involves the construction of a new conservatory. Lawretta, a director of CBL, assures him that they are the best in constructing conservatories and that he was at liberty to make relevant enquiries. Ricky believes her statement and agrees upon a cost of ?20,000 for constructing the conservatory. After the completion of half the work Ricky discovers that CBL had never constructed conservat ories. In addition, he comes to know that some of CBL’s former customers are claiming damages for defective and poor workmanship. Ricky refuses to pay CBL for the work completed and the latter decides to claim for breach of contract. ... ordships ruled that in such cases, it was sufficient if the plaintiff could establish that the defendant knew or was convinced that his statement was not factual.3 In Redgrave v Hurd, the plaintiff had made a statement regarding his firm’s income, while attempting to induce the defendant to become a partner, in his business. Hurd discovered that the statement was wrong and sought to rescind the contract. The lower court ruled in Redgrave’s favour, but the appellate court set aside this decision and held that Redgrave’s statement constituted innocent misrepresentation. Thereafter, it upheld the revocation of the contract by Hurd.4 A plaintiff is not liable for breach of contract if he had been unaware of the misrepresentation, at the time of the contract. This was the ruling in Horsfall v Thomas.5 Moreover, in Smith v Chadwick, the court ruled that there was no liability if the plaintiff had been aware of the misrepresentation and it was established that this know ledge could not have influenced his judgement.6 Finally, it was held in Peekay Internmark Ltd v Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd that there had to be actual knowledge of the misrepresentation and that constructive knowledge was insufficient.7 It is essential for some relationship to exist between the misrepresentation and the inducement for the claimant to form the contract. Thus, in Attwood v Small, the defendant had relied upon his agents’ report regarding the productivity of the mines and steelworks offered to him by the plaintiff.8 As he had not relied on the plaintiff’s statement, he was not permitted to rescind the contract. Conclusion The fraudulent misrepresentation made by CBL induced Ricky to hire the former to construct a conservatory. CBL had misrepresented to Ricky about its

The Life and Work of Artist, Paul Gauguin :: Art Essays

The Life and Work of Artist, Paul Gauguin Somerset Maughm's A Moon and Sixpence is about a man, Charles Strickland, who gives up his good life, including a wife and two children and a secure job, to seek a life as a painter. The character Charles Strickland and the events surrounding his life are loosely based on the real painter Paul Gauguin. Because I found the events of Strickland's life so riveting, I felt compelled to discover more about the real person Strickland was based on. Paul Gauguin himself was an extraordinary man who painted in the late 19th century. Webmuseum, Paris describes Gauguin as "one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th century art." However, the events in his life are what makes Gauguin's story so remarkable. The first part of Gauguin's life was uneventful and played no major part in formulating his desire to paint. Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848. He spent the first year of his life there, but in 1849, because of his father's political activities, his family was forced into exile. He spent his childhood growing up in Lima, Peru. In 1867, after his mother died, Gauguin was sent to live with Gustave Arosa back in France. It is during this time that he started collecting impressionist art and he himself started painting. Gauguin became a wealthy stockbroker, married, and had five children. However, with the financial crash of 1882, he decided to quit his job entirely and paint full time. It was during this time that he severed ties with his wife Mette when she went back to her native land of Denmark taking their children with her. Many people cannot grasp the concept that a man who had such a successful happy life would give it all up to become an impoverished painter. Yet Gauguin believed so much in what he was doing that he persisted on giving up the pleasures of his former life and chose to live instead a life of poverty. In this life of poverty, though, he was able to paint. Upon making this life changing decision Gauguin moved around France, spending brief periods of time in Rouen and Pont Avon, looking for work.

Advanced technology social interactions among young adults

Over the recent years, there has been an advance in technology that has greatly changed the way people interact socially and the way they work. Technological advancement in the communication sector especially has given rise to faster and improved modes of communication. One such mode of communication is the internet or world wide web (www). The Internet is a mode of communication that interconnects different independent networks to turn the world into one big village. This has been made possible through the invention of a new type of computers that have improved speed, high data storage capacity   and are small in size as compared to the older generation computers. They are also user friendly (Daniel J. Myers (2000).Thesis statement The Internet operates through communication software that enable the users to get access to the Internet. These are programs such as Mozillafirefox, Miocrosoft |Internet Explorer, Netscapes Navigator to name but a few. We also have programs that enable th e user to access information about any subject that he/she wishes to explore.Such programs are known as search engines and good examples are www.Google.com and www.yahoo.com. Such programs provide email and internet services. To add the list are Instant Messaging or chatting, blogging, Social Networking Sites and computer games among others.Telephone lines are used to interconnect different computers to enableflow of data or information. Through the   internet, communication has become faster and more reliable and a short text message (sms) is as reliable as a telephone call (Blaise W. Liffick, Ph.D.)Telecommunication sector has also benefited from the introduction of a convenient and fast mode of communication, the mobile phone. As the name suggests, this phone is portable and it ensures one of communication wherever you go as long as the area is covered by a network.Advanced technology has interconnected the computer, mobile phone and radio communication in such a way that a use r is able to listen to the radio online or through their mobile phone. The people who have embraced this kind of change in technology are the youth and this has greatly affected the way the that they interact within society. Improved computer literacy has favored the young people in that majority of them are computer literate and can understand the computer language. The youth for example are the dominant group that will be found at social networking sites. To understand better how advanced technology has affected the life of the young adult generation, we need to explore a bit into the different methods of communication. The mobile phone is the most easily accessible gadget used in modern day communication.   Millions of people worldwide especially the young adults have embraced this mode of communication and majority own mobile phones.A mobile phone has great advantage over a fixed telephone or computer in that it is portable and helps the user take communication wherever he or she goes. Communication has become faster and cheaper through calls or short text messages and people are now closely knit together through this network.Improvements to this service have given rise to radio and email communication through the mobile phone and one can now access the internet of listen to radio through the phone. Mobile phone communication means that information goes with you wherever you are.Through the mobile phone, it has become very easy to keep contact with colleagues such as former schoolmates, parents, friends etc.Everything has its own disadvantages and the mobile phone is no exception. Wrong information can easily be relayed through this mode of communication and lawbreakers have taken advantage of this.Unruly youths have been able to organize criminal activities in a faster and more organized manner making it difficult for the law to get them. The mobile phone has been a source of breakups in relationships as people disagree on phone. Young adults are most pron e to this kind of problem. The internet also known as the web or cyberspace has turned the world into one village by interconnecting and the world can now meet together on the internet.Anyone who can be able to access the internet has access to almost everything they need. Where young people previously referred to libraries and archives for information, they can now collect materials from the internet.  The internet works through a collection of web addresses or www which enable the user to access the internet . This is done through internet service providers who make these web pages accessible to the users. Various computer programs enable the user to carry out different functions over the internet such as chatting,   teleconferencing, blogging and email. The internet has become a source of employment for millions of young people around the world as they are the people working in the fields of networking, programming etc This means that a new social group that was not there befor e is now in existent and in operation. These groups have their own way of interacting and co-existing in their working and also social emvironment.E-mail is a mode of communication on the internet that links together subscribers who have registered on the internet. It allows a subscriber to receive, read, compose and reply mail online. This mode of communication is very popular with the young people as it is a more modern method of letter writing. It beats normal postage in that the reciepent   gets the information immediately. It is cheaper that a telephone call and carrys more information than a text message. The young adults have taken advantage of its convenience to update each other on different issues, to apply for schools and jobs etc.The email makes the distance covered by normal mail shorter, is faster and more reliable. We also have webmail the difference being that with an email you have to work online but with a webmail you work offline and get connected when sending th e information. The email service is now available through the mobile phone and this has made it even cheaper and more convenient as one does not have to visit a cyber room to send or receive an email (Joan Tunstall, J. (1999).Chatting   refers to a mode of communication over the internet in which two or more people in different localities can hold a conversation or discussion online by typing information on the computer. This is a style very popular with the youth as it is same as if people were talking face to face the only difference being that you cannot hear or see each other.Chat rooms created on the web have become meeting places fro many young people and they have also been able to make new friends through this channel. This has given rise to   new kind of social group that   communicates through chat rooms (Daniel J. Myers (2000).Blogging is another type of internet communication that is popular with the young people. This form of online publishing enables the user to ad d new information onto an already existing topic.Blogging is very convenient in that a new user can use an already existing blog to add new contributions to a certain topic. Blogging is very popular with people who wish to market their products as they have a fast means of letting fellow bloggers what’s on the market. The internet provides such programs as Windows Media Player that enables the user to play digital music through the computer e.g CDs, DVDs   and also listen to FM stations. Young people are fun lovers and they are now able to watch movies, listen to music and   radio through the internet. This can be done form the comfort of you living room or even in the office when relaxing. This has affected the mode of interaction amongst the youth in that they now no longer have to visit movie houses to watch movies but can borrow from the library .Download software programs also enable the young people to play various types of games which would otherwise have been un aff ordable in the real situation.Young adults are also able to share ideas through Social Networking Sites (SNSs). Social Network Sites are internet based services that enable people to created their own personal profiles. Examples are Mysapce and Facebook. These profiles can be shared with other persons within a closed environment. Users will be able to interact within the same user group although these sites can also be viewed by non-users. Users are able to upload such items as photos, videos etc. This mode of communication is used to enhance interaction between relationships that were already existing offline. Users of this service are introduced by others already in the service and thus the reason why young people are attracted to SNSs; because their friends are already on these sites. This work to create closed user groups. Social Network Sites grow in popularity among people of a certain country, race, sex or even community. SNSs   like CyWorld and Orkut for example are very popu lar in countries such as Korea, India and Brazil. An SNS will therefore enable a certain community or group to post and share comments as well as enhance friendships. The users are able to express themselves while at the same time interacting with others within an SNS   community. This mode of communication makes interaction easier and faster by reducing distance between the users (Ramy H.N., Moppett S. A (2000).Teleconfrencing is yet another mode if internet communication that has changed the way young adults interact. This refers to holding of meetings through the internet between groups at different geographical locations. Unlike in chatting, the parties involved are able to see and hear each other.Social forums   involving young people as well as academic exchange programs are carried out through teleconferencing.   This means that ideas are exchanged and solutions to various found while avoiding traveling costs.

Balance Scorecard

Balance Scorecard (BSC) is the focus of every company because of great belief that this is an approach for measuring performance with the combination of the so-called traditional measurement of financial aspect compared to the measurement of non-financial ones. BSC seeks the performance’s measurement of the business as a whole with the four (4) important perspectives listed as follows: a) Financial Perspective is one of the perspectives that the company needs to focus on because this is measuring the performance of financial part’s reflection. This has something to do with the return of investment or simply termed as ROI, the company’s cash flow including the number of debtors and economic value-added. b) Customer Perspective is the other measures to have the customers’ direct impact for the computation of the company’s market share or the percentage of market, the surveys made to customer that also includes the number of complaints. c) Internal Busi ness Processes Perspective is the measurement of reflection of the performance of business processes like the presentation of manufacturing efficiency cycle, the processing time information as well as the measures of productivity.d) Learning and Growth Perspective is the measures in order to describe the employees of the company in terms of the learning curve like the profile of staff education, the time of training and the survey made to the satisfaction of employees. The perspectives as stated above helped small and large companies to translate the strategy into action and even provide the metrical setting to track the progress of the of all companies. Balance Scorecard P 3 Analysis:As further analyzed, the measures are truly ‘customer centric’ because as proven the customer satisfaction was viewed due to increased in sales or the increase in income resulting from the acceptance of the product and the repeated customers’ generation. In addition, the product shi pment is related to the driving satisfaction of many customers that were met by the companies. The efforts of marketing are said to be measured by the data being tracked from the web portal which was then created for the partners’ distribution channel. The items that are tracked are the site usage, online ordering and the effects of direct mailing in the areas of marketing as well as advertisement on the leading generation and the activity in the portal level. The improved performance was truly due to the company’s viewing from the perspective of potential, prospective and present customers because Balance scorecard was exactly simplified to the four (4) key measures depicting the satisfaction among customers, hassle index of customers, the delivery that must be on-time and most importantly the lead times.Bridgeport Hospital is using the BSC for four (4) years and proven that the satisfaction of patients and customers increased. Many businesses considered to be small or large are continuously earning because the greater contributions are coming from customers whether old or new customers. A higher percentage is absolutely coming from the customers in order for many companies to grow and even learn to improve their products or services. BSC really contributes in achieving the success of most companies because at an early period, many companies may still improve the things that should be done in order to meet the needs of their customers.More issues from customers as well as their complaints may be resolved through the use of BSC. Balance Scorecard P 4 Conclusion: I think that the efforts of the companies to evaluate the business from the customers perspective was only one of the key contributions to improve performance, because this may give focus wherein the strategy described as competitive correspond to the success of most firms by means of targeting the attention of the segment specific to the market such as the niche in the market. This strateg y is very effective and done in order to survive wherein the companies may face the distress in financial areas. SGC and Futura are the companies using BSC, and they proved that the point of evaluating the business from the perspective of customer is a great help to the company as a whole and resulted to increase in sales and income. I should say that there should be equal reviews with regards to financial, internal business processes and the learning and growth perspectives aside from the customer perspectives that most companies should pay attention to.BSC is a tool in management providing the framework to translate the strategy into action and as mentioned this is a combination of the financial and non-financial measurement. This is seeking the measurement of performance of the business to financial, customer, internal business processes as well as learning and growth perspectives. In totality, this will provide a set of tracking metrics in order to track the progress of most com panies and against the objectives as well as the goals for meeting the initiatives strategically. The managers’ and employees’ motivation may also include their corresponding performance because these are the key enterprise’s challenges needed for more improvement of most companies. The said initiatives in strategic aspect may result to the departmental cascades and the objectives of individual corresponding to the strategy. Balance Scorecard P 5 References Ahn, H. My Side of the Mountain essays

My Side of the Mountain essays Sam Gribley is tired of living in a crowded New York City apartment with his dad,mom and 8 brothers and sisters, so he runs away looking for his Great-grandfather Gribleys land in the Catskill Mountain wilderness. The Gribley land had not been inhabited by any Gribleys for around 100 years. Sam hitched rides trying to get to the farm. Sam thought he prepared himself for this adventure by reading books in the New York City public library about how to survive on the land. No one in his family took his plans seriously though. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, and some flint and steel, he relied on his own ingenuity and the resources of the land to survive. Sam arrived in the Catskills and went to the Delhi library to find information about Gribleys farm. A nice librarian found information that was very old, this helped Sam find the farm. This was the beginning of Sams great adventure. On his great-grandfathers farm he learns how to survive. At first he struggles to make a fire, then he had trouble whittling wooden fishing hooks to catch fish, but he ended up perfecting the hooks and catching a few fish. He quickly realizes that he needs shelter; just building and staying around a campfire wont do, so he decides to set a fire inside a hemlock tree and hollow himself out a room. Here he builds himself a little hidden home in the forest. His tree home consists of a hidden door made of deerskin, a bed and a fireplace to keep him warn in winter. People come to the forest and are all around him, but they never discover him in his tree home. He struggled every day to find food, only to find that frog legs and turtle soup arent bad food. He also ate wild onions, acorns, apples, wild strawberries, and sometimes rabbit that he manages to catch in some traps he had built. ...

Strategic Management Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Strategic Management - Personal Statement Example In fulfilling my career goal of establishing and managing my own chain of Korean restaurant with the hope of eventually going global in profitable foreign markets, I recognize the importance of fully understanding the process of creating a strategy and implementing that strategy in a day to day basis. In line with what has been discussed in this course, I will be following the specific process in strategic management: development of a strategic vision; setting of objectives; establishment of the strategy to achieve the objectives and vision; implementation and execution of the strategy; and monitoring of developments, evaluation of performance, and making adjustments. I also believe that strategic management is also largely dependent on the company's ability to strategically respond to the challenges and opportunities in its external environment by continuously ensuring the alignment of its resources in carrying out its strategies and ensuring the effectiveness of its chosen strategy and modifying it if situation requires. Like a business organization, I believe that individuals should also take a strategic approach in managing goals and objectives. ... jective is to equip myself with the necessary knowledge and skills academically, be able to secure a start-up position in an international restaurant chain, and move up the organizational ladder while acquiring the strengths and competencies needed in my prospective post. In order to achieve this, I will be building my capability and emphasize my unique skills in order to differentiate myself from my colleagues. This will ensure that I will be getting the entry position in the international restaurant. In order to implement this strategy, I will start as early as now to identify the skills and characteristics that employers require, acquire and develop these skills, and highlight this during the recruitment process. 2. As a CEO you are going with a start-up company who wants to eventually go public. What is your analysis for figuring out what strategy you want to choose What strategy do you finally choose and what steps will you have to take to implement You first need to choose your industry (hospitality)segment. You need to give the reader a scenario that would establish some background for your company. This can be fiction or you can take segments from a real company. A start-up business which eventually hopes to go public will need to survive daunting challenges along the way. The primary concern of this firm will be the identification of opportunities which are not currently taken advantage in the market, establishing a good name in the industry, battling with the established competitors, and the creation and execution of a growth strategy. Deriving its name from the most popular Korean food, Kimchi Restaurant commences its operation last January 2006. Being a start-up Korean chain, it sets up three stores in three key locations including Seoul, Pusan, and
